CURRY TIMES RESTAURANT

When it comes to curry puff, there is probably no other brand capable of surpassing the taste of Old Chang Kee. With 60 years of history and over 70 outlets/kiosk islandwide, there are sure many fans out there who would agree with us that this is the King of Curry Puff!  It was amazing to see how a traditional snack maker could boomed into a public listed company and with many spin off brands such as Bun Times, Mushroom cafe, Dip ‘n’ Go and Curry Times.

Perhaps their curry puff is too good that it has overshadowed the rest of their dishes. But Old Chang Kee has generally done well with the side kick, such as spring O, carrot K8, yam k8, Gyoza etc.  However, the same could not be said for their first theme restaurant chain in Singapore, Curry Times.

We chanced by Curry Times’s outlet in Changi Airport Terminal 3 and decided to check it out.  We ordered the dishes that were rather “safe”: curry bun, Hae Bee Hiam bun, prata, and Laksa goreng.

The fillings of the curry bun and Hae Bee Hiam bun were very dry and these were way different from the usual moist in the fillings of Old Chang Kee’s curry puffs.  The prata and the accompanied curry sauce was typical – we were anticipating for surprises given Old Chang Kee’s huge reputation.  The laksa goreng could be done better if they can be more generous with the coconut milk for the laksa sauce.  The portion was really pathetic and the ingredients such as the prawns and fish cakes were overcooked.

Unlike the parent company, Curry Times failed to impress and it was hard to relate it to the finest maker of curry puff. Fortunately, the negative impression did not affect our love for Old Chang Kee. After the meal at Curry Times, we have immediately pick up the curry puff at Old Chang Kee; ahh… now that’s the great taste we are talking about!
