The latest addition to the brands under the Gao Ji Food umbrella – Steamed Gourmet – Clay Bowl Rice made its official debut at Waterway Point on 18 January 2016.
Originating from Fo Shan in Guangzhou, steaming rice in a clay bowl is a traditional method that was prevalently used in the olden days. Using a clay bowl to steam rice has these benefits:
1. The clay bowl is able to withstand heat and due to its semi-porous nature, the heat is evenly distributed and the food is steamed up evenly.
2. Apart from having incredible rice flavour, the rice grains are beautifully separated from each other, creating the perfect texture.
Till now, Clay Bowl Rice items are commonly found and renowned food delicacies of Fo Shan.
Steamed Gourmet – Clay Bowl Rice aims to bring to you authentic and traditional Cantonese home-style delicacies that are steamed against a bed of fragrant white rice in a clay bowl, akin to those found in Fo Shan. Affordably priced from $3.90 to $4.90, the food portioning and wallet-friendly prices will win the hearts of customers who are looking to get more bang for their buck. In addition, customers can also opt to complete their meal with 15 types of steamed side dishes to choose from and those who love soup can opt to have our soup-of-the-day as an accompaniment. Our signatures include Mushroom and Chicken with Steamed Rice, Black Bean Pork Ribs with Steamed Rice and Shrimp Paste Pork Slices with Steamed Rice.
One of our signature items is Mushroom and Chicken with Steamed Rice ($4.50), which will delight your palate with its combination of succulent chicken meat and mushrooms. What’s more, the natural essence from the chicken meat and mushroom oozes into the rice during the process of steaming, resulting in a flavourful dish that will definitely earn the praises of customers.
Another must-try signature item is a popular dish that is one of the perennial favourites among the Cantonese – Black Bean Pork Ribs with Steamed Rice ($4.50). Pairing bite-size morsels of tender pork ribs with salty black beans is the ultimate savoury treat that will whet your appetite, especially when its addictive sauce is paired with rice.
Another traditional Cantonese classic is our signature Shrimp Paste Pork Slices with Steamed Rice ($4.50). The saltiness of the shrimp paste sauce coupled with tender and fatty pork slices results in a flavourful dish with a distinctive aroma. This dish promises to tantalise your taste buds and tastes excellent when paired with rice.

BRAND HISTORY OF GAO JI FOOD
In 1954, our founder, Mr. Chong Seng Tong, plied the streets of Chinatown with his wife on foot selling his specialty Hakka Yong Tow Foo. In 1960, old Mr. Chong set up a zinc-and-wooden mobile kiosk under a tree next to Majestic Theatre, which became a permanent spot for his stall where he continued to serve his signature dish to his faithful customers. When the old Mr. Chong fell ill, his wife continued the business to support the family with the help of their son, Mr. Chong Yik Hwee. From the tender age of 12, Mr. Chong Yik Hwee picked up the knowledge and skills of the trade. Combined with his enterprising spirit and hard work, Mr. Chong Yik Hwee grew the business and set up Gao Ji Food (S) Pte Ltd in 1987.
