When anyone mentioned Toast Box, it is usually the “kopi”, bread and soft-boiled eggs that comes in mind. However, the “nanyang” style coffee shop do serves other local delights such as curry chicken, mee rebus, laksa, and mee siam. In this review, I have checked out their laksa and mee rebus at the City Sqaure Mall outlet.
The chef has injected surprises to the laksa by using the Mee Tai Bak instead of the typical thick rice noodle. There was light fragrance of coconut and curry paste in the gravy but I would prefer it to be thicker. I was also disappointed with the conservative amount of beansprouts and tau pok. The bowl was without cockles and sprinkled laksa leaves, ingredients which I thought were critical.
Their mee rebus was equally tiny in portion and with no garnishes (such as fried onions). The gravy was rather watery and lacks the peanut taste. However, the deep fried bean curd and the yellow noodles were nicely prepared.
The Laksa and mee rebus come in a set meal comprises of the main dish and a barley or coffee. It is still the beverages that save the day. In my subsequent visits to Toast Box, I may just play safe by ordering their coffee and toast.
